Le Creuset Crepe Pan Is the Real Thing

No one really needs a Le Creuset Enameled Cast-Iron Crepe Pan, Marseille. At least, no one I know does. I’m pretty sure that most professional cooks and chefs, let alone decent home cooks like me, all get along fine when we make crepes in a regular old flat frying pan. But oh, how we love the real thing if we can get it.

Le Creuset is Tres Sexy

First of all, it’s LeCreuset. The French name alone is sexy, but that’s not enough by itself. The name brings with it products that look beautiful and work perfectly for a lifetime. LeCreuset does make another crepe pan, a nonstick one with a slightly larger bottom, but it doesn’t have that same lovely orangey-red (or blue) finish to it, and it doesn’t sing out “French! Professional cookware!” as this one does.
This Le Creuset Enameled Cast-Iron Crepe Pan, Marseille blue (or orangey red) enameled, cast-iron pot with a black enamel interior is not the lightest of crepe pans, but it makes for smooth and even heating, with no hot spots or underdone edges on the crepe, no matter how thick or thin the batter. This pan comes with an 8-inch “rateau” (a.k.a. crepe spreader) which is a sort of rounded stick for smoothing out the batter – I didn’t need it but it’s fun to have on hand. Like the nice orange enameled pans I like to keep on display in my kitchen, the rateau makes me feel good – and feel like a good cook, too.
I cherish my LeCreuset items as I would anything precious. When I first get a new piece, I usually wash it well in soft soap and warm water and then dry it carefully. (Note: this piece is dishwasher safe, but I actual prefer washing nice dishes by hand.) Happily, the Le Creuset Enameled Cast-Iron Crepe Pan, Marseille doesn’t require any seasoning or breaking in, so I got right down to crepe-making before I’d even recycled the packing materials and put away the box.

Even the First Crepe Comes out Right

The first results were excellent – even the first crepe, which in my experience never works as well as subsequent ones, came out nicely browned and lightly crunchy. I like it that the handle keeps my wrist from getting burnt, and it’s easy to lift and slide the batter around in the pan. Also, when I’d made a stack of crepes (and tasted several), I could put the whole pan, stacked with ready-made crepes, into the oven. I left them there on a low oven setting so other family members could eat them through the morning, as they woke up – useful for people on different time clocks or a houseful of guests.

I make crepes on a regular basis and this is the best crepe pan I have ever had. I tried T-Fal, Calphalon and an Italian brand (I don’t remember the name). Nothing compares to the Le Creuset pan.
