Which Pillow Is Best?

When it comes to sleep aids, pillows are the new mattresses,. Years ago I remember friends discussing what kind of beds/mattresses best supported their backs. Now that we’ve gotten rid of our waterbeds and moved onto firm mattresses, were all seeking perfect neck alignment via pillow comfort.

Many pillow reviews, no best pillow

In trying to find ways to improve my sleep and reduce my snoring, I researched quite a few reviews about how to pick the best pillow, the purposes of all different pillows, personal preferences in pillows, and various medical claims and counter-claims about pillows. After reading a dozen opinions and more ads, I’ve realized that there’s no one best pillow for everyone: it comes down to personal preference, and what feels good.

Since I’m already trying about 4 different kinds of pillows, none of which feels good, I decided to look on Amazon and find the best-seller pillow for people like me (that is,insomniacs and/or snorers). The number one seller in Specialty Medical Pillows is the Sleep Innovations Cool Contour Memory Foam Pillow. Even this one, though, gets a fair number of negative reviews, which goes to show that everyone needs/wants a different pillow.

Adaptable design -Contour Memory Foam Pillow

In some ways it’s like many other memory foam pillows. At 20 x 15 x 5 it’s about average size, but higher than some other memory pillows. Its assymetrical design (higher along one side than the other) means you can turn it so it’s best for your own neck, and it fits different size people. The foam is mite-and allergen-proof, and the price includes a washable 100% cotton terry velour cover. The firmness is about average, a bit firmer than some.

But this Sleep Innovations Cool Contour Memory Foam Pillow is unusual in several ways. Most obviously, it has two separate parts, or layers. The outside memory foam, the blue layer, is designed to keep the pillow feeling cool against your skin. It doesn’t get warm, so you never have to turn it over to get a cool, fresh place to lay your head.

The inner layer is SureTemp memory foam. Although the pillow does mold to your neck (and head, shoulder, etc.) it also provides adequate support so your head doesn’t slump or shift around. The shape lends itself to sleeping on your back or side. Because it has both high and low loft areas, you can use it in the position that best supports your neck. It should feel, when you lie down, as if your head is pretty much in line with your spine; not as if its crumpling forwards (if you lie on your side) and not pushed up (if you lie on your back). The memory foam molds to fit the sleeper, depending on weight and pressure of the body. This allows the user to relax better and move around less.

Contour Memory Foam Pillow Little extras

This Sleep Innovations Cool Contour Memory Foam Pillow comes with a five-year warrantee (longer than many other memory foam pillows). Also, the memory foam is made in the USA.

What Others think About the Contour Memory Foam Pillow

Before sending for the pillow myself, I wanted to hear about others’ experiences. This review, below, not only describes the user’s first experience of the Sleep Innovations Cool Contour Memory Foam Pillow but goes on to give updates over weeks, months and even a year.

5.0 out of 5 stars
So far – Great pillow! April 26, 2012
By M. Green
I’m a notorious side sleeper and was looking for more support for my neck. I recently returned another “memory foam” pillow I ordered off Amazon, as it was junk. This is my second attempt at finding a decent pillow… And I think we may have a winner!

-The pillow arrived quickly (always a plus).
-It didn’t have that awful chemical smell straight out of the package, like the other memory foam pillow I had.
-The “cool contour” blue layer really seems to help keep you cool while sleeping. I used to wake up over-heated even with the fan on, and this has really made a difference.
-The choice between the “high or low loft” as they put it is awesome! So it’s still comfortable even while sleeping on your back (using the low loft, of course).
-Perfect amount of support – great memory foam; firm but still gives way just the right amount so you don’t have any pressure points.
-Very reasonable price plus free shipping (w/ Prime, at least)

-Straight out of the box, the blue “Cool Contour” layer is separating from the other section of foam… not sure if this will ever be an issue but it did catch my eye.

And that’s about it for cons at the moment (I’ve only slept on this pillow 3 nights, so I’ll update if anything comes up!)

At this point, I’d definitely recommend this pillow.

UPDATE – 5/09/2012 – I am still totally stoked on this pillow! The quality is there, the cooling effect of the blue layer has made all the difference, especially now that it’s starting to warm up at night. Still highly recommend the pillow! :)

UPDATE #2 – 7/30/2012 – Just because I like keeping people in the loop, I figured I will update again to say I still LOVE this pillow! I use it on its own every night. I never have nick stiffness anymore. My neck doesn’t get sweaty, I sleep better on my side. All in all I really truly recommend this pillow! :)

UPDATE #3 – 06/07/2013 – As someone asked for an update since it’s been a year, figured I’d update the post 🙂 – The pillow is still my favorite of all time and I still use it every single night! I’m pregnant now so I put a second pillow under this one for added support [heartburn sucks without a second pillow] but all in all I still highly recommend it! The firmness hasn’t given, it’s still holding its shape perfectly, hasn’t started to fall apart, especially that spot that wasn’t attached very well straight out of the box [the blue contour part] so no issues there.

More Reviews of the Contour Memory Foam Pillow

On Average, Amazon reviewers give this pillow four out of five stars. There are nearly 300 reviews of this item, and most are positive, but the most common negative reviews says that the pillow smells bad or chemically at least when it first arrives. However, some reviewers don’t notice that smell, or they say the smell disappears once the pillow is aired out.
