Grill Thrills: Le Creuset Enameled Cast Iron and the Smugness Factor

I’m trying not to feel smug about adding the Enameled Cast Iron 10 1/4 Inch Square Skillet Grill to my Le Creuset collection, but it’s hard. Some of my family who don’t cook are getting tired of hearing me extol its virtues, so I’m glad to talk in this forum about how much I love this pan – people reading this understand why and how good cookware matters.

Low-fat Crunch With the Le Creuset Enameled Cast Iron Square Skillet Grill

Le Creuset Enameled Cast Iron 10 1/4 Inch Square Skillet Grills It was pretty much Martha Stewart’s fault that I had to have this pan. I recently saw some photos in her magazine and decided that a grilled-cheese sandwich, done right, on a grill, was the epitome of winter comfort food. A regular frying pan no longer sufficed: I wanted a grill that would leave nice dark brown marks on my sourdough. The ridges on the Enameled Cast Iron 10 1/4 Inch Square Skillet Grill do just that: giving everything a professional look and a professional crunch that adds no extra calories.
In fact, some of the calories of my grilled Greek haloumi cheese (or tofu burgers, or peppers, or your chicken, fish, or you-name-it) are reduced anyway in this pan, because it raises the food slightly above the level of the oil, so less soaks into the thing you’re eating. This gives a low-fat dimension to decadent, crispy sandwiches and other grilled goodies.

Le Creuset Enameled Cast Iron Square Skillet Grill Portable & Professional

Le Creuset Enameled Cast Iron 10 1/4 Inch Square Skillet GrillsThe pan will accommodate a meal (steaks, fish, sausages, etc.) for four people, and the square shape (about 12″ by 13″ on the outside) and the enameled cast iron make for nice, even heating – no cool spots or hot spots on the food (except for those great singe-marks!). Also, like the Le Creuset sauce pot, it has a second “helper” handle opposite the main handle, in case you ever need to move it while it’s full of food. I haven’t used that feature, but it could come in handy if you wanted to take the pot to a party or even outside.

The main idea for this kind of grill is to bring barbecuing indoors, for winter seasons or for cold climates. But also, conveniently, the grill is good in the oven and under the broiler as well as on the stovetop.

The only downside – and it’s not much of one – is that you do need to hand-wash this item. But I usually do all my Le Creuset by hand anyway, just because I love it (is that weird?). The nonstick surface keeps it pretty clean, so it’s easy to wash.

Le Creuset Enameled Cast Iron 10 1/4 Inch Square Skillet Grills I knew I wanted this Enameled Cast Iron 10 1/4 Inch Square Skillet Grill as soon as I saw those grill marks on the sandwich, but after getting my Le Creuset grill I enjoyed reading some of its reviews, such as this one:

5.0 out of 5 stars MANY A MEAL FROM THIS SQUARE DEAL! August 21, 2001

Color Name: Flame
(1) Where is it written, who decreed that skillets should be round? (2) Why has it taken me so long to discover the advantages of a square fry pan?
The answers are: nowhere that I know of, and because my mother always used a round skillet. She would have loved this enameled cast iron beauty that leaves appetizing sear marks on meat – a char effect without the mess. The ribbed base captures grease allowing for healthier low fat cooking, and the surface is a satiny black enamel that cleans in a breeze.
It’s compatible with all heating surfaces, and has an easy hold comfortable handle. We lightly applied vegetable oil to the ribs before our first use, and for several times thereafter. Since then there has been no need for the addition of oils. By heating the grill for a few minutes on medium heat (test with a drop of water and heat until water droplets sizzle) we’ve found the cooking surface primed for superior cooking.
This nifty item has such a plethora of uses – it can be used in the oven (keep your oven glove at the ready) or even on a backyard barbecue.

L. Bryant Great for searing!, April 22, 2013
Le Creuset is my favorite cookware and this grill pan does a super job of searing meats, chicken and fish. I had steak which was not the best cut of meat, a bit on the tough side; using the grill pan seared the meat so that it was tender and tasty with the grill marks making for a nice presentation.

What I like about reading other people’s reviews is that I can learn so much more about my product: for instance, it’s okay to do grilled desserts (such as pears or pineapple) on this grill: the sugar might stick at first but it comes off when cooled. And I learned that I’m not the only one who likes washing these by hand! I’m guessing I’m not the only one who’s feeling a bit smug about owning one of these, too.

Where to Purchase the Le Creuset Enameled Cast Iron Square Skillet Grill

Although my local retailer had these wonderful grills I decided to check online to compare prices. Of all the online sites that I checked Amazon.com had by far the best for the Enameled Cast Iron 10 1/4 Inch Square Skillet Grill. If you order one at Amazon.com, be sure to get the free shipping – and please let me know if you get the smugness factor with it!
